This Standard aims to focus suppliers' attention on key areas of product safety. Like the widely adopted BRC Food Standard, it provides a common approach for the certification of companies supplying consumer products to the UK.
The Standard encompasses the fundamental principles of the retailers' own standards and will, as with the other Standards, be continually reviewed to reflect retailer and supplier requirements.
The Standard was designed to assist retailers in their fulfilment of legal obligations and protection of the consumer because obligations placed on UK retailer are such that they would wish to promote best practice across the supply chain.
The standard covers a wide array of non-food products including household appliances, audio& visual equipment medical products and seasonal products and gifts to name but a few.
Despite the wide-ranging nature of the products covered by the publication, core requirement criteria have been identified, and together with specific product guidelines, a Standard has been developed that will have mutual benefit for both retailer and suppliers alike.
